Coping With Walt Disney World Weather

Since Walt Disney world weather is a critical factor in having an enjoyable vacation, you would be wise to check it out before you book your vacation. Some things you simply can not avoid, depending on the time of year, but certain times of year may be more of a problem than others. Bad weather and even the threat of very heavy rains can close some rides and even an entire theme park. The water parks are especially vulnerable to approaching storms and sometimes may be shut down a couple times in a single week.

General year round temperatures at Disney World are warm and can range from the low or mid 90's during July and August to the low 70's in December and January. It will be cooler at night with temperatures in the low 70's to the low 50's. It can, of course be hotter or colder than the average so be prepared. Since most of the Disney character costumes are fairly heavy, you'll note that the characters are usually only around for a short time during hotter weather and the hottest times of day. It wouldn't be good public relations for children to see Mickey drop from heat exhaustion and Disney does like to take care of the cast members.

Florida is hurricane country, but luckily for Walt Disney World weather, it's located inland and only once (during Hurricane Floyd) has the park had to close. Aside from the heat, especially in July and August, the main weather problem you're likely to run into is rain. Though not always the case, during the summer months rain will often fall for an hour or two in the afternoon. And these can be serious, heavy, tropical deluge type rains. From June through August, normal rainfall is from 6 to 8 inches per month and there's a 50% chance of rain on any given day. The good part is that these are usually short and while heavy, will generally occur in the mid to late afternoon so you can plan for them.

If you can stand the heat, you'll find that during the summer many visitors will wait out the hottest part of the afternoon at their hotels. Of course, you may prefer to do the same thing. Hats and sunscreen can save you from the nastiness of a theme park sunburn. Getting your skin roasted on your first day can spoil what could be a great vacation. You need to take the sun seriously and use good sunblock on any exposed skin. And if you are going on any water rides or visiting the water parks, make sure it's waterproof sunblock. If you have children with you make sure they are protected and that the sunblock hasn't washed off. A sunburned child hurts and there's not a lot you can do after the fact.

Disney has provided drinking fountains all over the parks. Use them and make sure your children are getting enough fluids. Heat, action and excitement can get you dehydrated faster than you might think and fainting is bad form. One nice feature of Walt Disney world weather is that the humidity isn't excessive. Since it normally is between 65 and 75%, you can adapt to it pretty quickly and it's rarely a difficulty. Disney World is in a exceptionally good location overall and the with a little care and forethought the weather shouldn't cause you any problems.
