Florida Attractions Are More Than Just Disney WorldIs there actually more to Florida than Disney World? You're kidding, right? Florida attractions have been pulling tourists as well as retirees for a long long time. First my grandparents retired from the not terribly hospitable climate of northern Illinois to Florida. Year around golf, a warm climate and the beauty of the gulf coast drew them to St. Petersburg. Then, of course, my own parents also retired to Florida for those reasons plus the fact that housing and the overall cost of living were lower. Aside from the structured leisure complexes, most notably Disney World outside Orlando, Florida is full of beautiful beaches, vibrant cities and more things to do than anyone could use up in a life time. From the off beat environment of Key West through the incredible experience of Little Cuba in Miami, the night life in South Beach with it's unique cultural mixes, to old standby's like the mermaids at Weeki Wachee springs (by the way, there's a lawsuit going on between the owners and the water management agency which leases them the spring, so this historic 60 year old attraction could disappear soon), you can discover some things you simply won't believe have been there all along waiting for you to finally show up. Skin diving, whether you snorkel or use scuba gear, in the Florida Keys - the chain of islands leading south from Miami, is both easily accessible and remarkably beautiful. A huge number of Florida attractions can be found in or around Orlando. Of course, the major attraction is Disney World, but you also have the Universal Studios theme park and a host of other unusual and specialized parks. Not to far from Orlando you can also visit the Kennedy Space Center. Aside from the water parks, you also can make easy journeys to beaches. One thing I've found fascinating is that while there are extremely expensive luxury hotels and resorts all over Florida, a little judicious checking on the internet can find you some deals you will simply not believe. On my last trip to Disney World with my wife and two kids we found a very nice motel in Orlando for less than USD $40 per night - and it included an exceptional full buffet breakfast. Of course, it also will depend on the season, but you don't need to spend a fortune to enjoy all of Florida's attractions. With it's congenial climate, multitude of attractions and hospitality to international and domestic visitors, Florida is one of the world's primary tourist destinations. If you've never been, you have no idea just what you're missing so if you have the chance, check out the Florida attractions that you want to see and then just do it. It can be a truly unforgettable experience. |
